About the Fund

Our Story

The Generative Art Fund was established in 2021 by Erick Calderon and Jeff Davis following the "Natively Digital" auction at Sotheby's. The auction featured a collection of NFTs from the first nineteen curated projects at Art Blocks that was assembled from their personal collections. Calderon and Davis dedicated all proceeds from the sale to the creation of a charitable fund to support the field of generative art. Since the inaugural contribution, the Generative Art Fund has seen significant growth, fueled by the generous contributions of other artists and supporters.

Our Mission

The mission of the Generative Art Fund is to elevate generative art in all its forms and promote creative coding as a meaningful artistic practice. Our work centers on providing targeted fiscal support to organizations that embody our core values: promoting software literacy in the visual arts, fostering diversity and inclusivity, and expanding public appreciation for the medium. We are committed to building a sustainable future for generative art and supporting its practice and recognition within the broader art world.

Our Impact

Our giving reflects our commitment to nurturing a vibrant and inclusive community around generative art. We’ve provided grants to universities and nonprofit organizations that promote creative coding and software literacy in the visual arts, with a particular focus on underrepresented communities. We’ve supported museum exhibitions and other institutional initiatives that seek to feature and catalog generative art, and we’ve provided seed funding for the development of a film series documenting the history and evolution of computational art.

Get Involved

Donations and Support

We invite you to contribute to our mission. Your donations enable us to maintain current giving levels while pursuing our goal of evolving the Generative Art Fund into the Generative Art Foundation. The planned Foundation will engage the broad spectrum of the generative art community by fostering opportunities for artists, advancing educational initiatives, ensuring long-term preservation of the art form, and forming partnerships with cultural institutions to amplify our mission. With more than $1.5 million already donated by artists and individuals who believe in the future of generative art, we seek to further grow our endowment to secure the operational sustainability of the Generative Art Foundation for decades to come.

Grant Requests

As we continue to grow our endowment to fully establish the Generative Art Foundation, we welcome ongoing grant proposals from organizations that align with our mission. If you are working on initiatives dedicated to fostering the growth and appreciation of generative art and creative coding, we encourage you to reach out.
